One of the most well-preserved fortification buildings of middle century Samegrelo is located about 15 kilometers from Zugdidi, in the beautiful village of Jikhashkari. The fortress had an important role in protecting the Chanistskali gorge, wherefrom this part of Samegrelo is clearly visible. Davit Dadiani, the last ruler of Samegrelo, was born in a small house standing inside the castle. The Chakvinji Fortress is easily accessible and attracts viewers’ attention on the road from Zugdidi to Chkhorotsku.
