The Botanical Garden is located near Dadiani Palace. It was initiated by David Dadiani and his wife, Ekaterine Chachavadze-Dadiani, in the XVIII century. An orangery was also arranged on the territory of the garden. Local unique flora is enriched by trees and plants specially ordered from Versailles. Invited gardeners and horticulturists, Joseph Babin and the Zamberletti brothers, have given the Botanical Garden a unique and inimitable style.
An artificial lake and the adjacent islands of the garden were allegedly Queen Ekaterine's favorite places. Moreover, this was supposedly the favorite place for the distinguished guests of the Odishi Province, Bertha von Suttner, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky! According to legend, the great composer was delighted by the beautiful swans in the lake, which served as inspiration for the famous opera!
The elements of time, as well as the barbarousness of the Ottoman Emperor Iskender Pasha, caused significant damage to the Zugdidi Botanical Garden. A large-scale rehabilitation of the Garden, however, is now on-going and will astonish visitors once again in the years to come!
